PHOENIX, AZ—Today, environmental, educational, and faith groups called on Senator Flake to oppose the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court due to his hostility to environmental protection and access to justice to protect our air and water.

Sandy Bahr, Grand Canyon Chapter Director, issued the following statement.

“We are asking Senator Flake to put the long-term welfare of the country ahead of partisan politics and to oppose the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Judge Kavanaugh’s record exposes him as a judge who has used cases to effectively rewrite statutes, creating obstacles for agency regulation, including environmental protections. The last thing we need is a Supreme Court Justice who values corporate profits over people and public health. Moreover, Judge Kavanaugh’s decisions reveal a tendency to limit the public’s right to access justice through the courts by supporting obstructive ‘standing’ requirements while at the same time removing barriers for some of our country’s largest polluters. Judge Kavanaugh’s brand of judging would mean that courthouse doors will often be closed to Senator Flake’s constituents who care deeply about protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the planet on which we live and our children will inherit.”
