Outings

How We Hike and Camp

Camera Committee Outings include day hikes, road trips, car-camps and backpacks.

Our hikes are "photo-paced" allowing participants ample opportunity to capture their best images. We try to be at the right locations at the right time for the best light. Our camping trips usually include a social hour around snacks, dessert or a campfire to swap stories and photo ideas. We often follow the outing with a reunion to look at photos.

We love beautiful locations that inspire engagement with the natural world and the conservation that follows, but we recognize that photos created in distressed environments have the power to build awareness and spur action.

Outings are open to all. Some of our outings are co-sponsored with other groups and sections like the Natural Science Section, Wilderness Adventures Section, and the Pasadena Group.

Outings Leaders

Camera Committee Outings leaders are trained and certified by the Angeles Chapter and the Sierra Club Safety Committee. Each leader renews their certifications every two years.

We are always interested in adding leaders to our roster and are happy to help members on the path to Leadership Certification. We also welcome participation of active leaders in other activity sections.

If you are interested in leading trips with the Camera Committee, please contact our Outings Co-Chairs Alison Boyle and Joan Schipper.

About Our Outings Banner

John Boyle caught this moment at the end of a Thanksgiving Week tide pool outing in Crystal Cove organized by Alison Boyle.

Camera Committee Outings leader, Alison Boyle, loves the ocean and the marine life found in tide pools.  She enjoys sharing these special places on our trips so that others may experience them also She knows what kind of tide pool life to look for and where to look for it. She plans these outings on the best days and at the correct time to maximize access to pools and the critters and plants that live there. If you're lucky enough to have an afternoon minus low tide, she'll stay out for the last drop of light and suggest dinner or happy hour after to swap tales of sightings and photo techniques and tools.  Check out Alison's Focal Points Magazine (July-August, 2023) cover story to see her remarkable images.
