We had another exciting Wolf Awareness Week! Thank you to all those that participated!
This year, we focused on the cultural significance of wolves to the Ojibwe community and how this is reflected in their views on contemporary wolf stewardship. Our 2024 Wolf Awareness Week was dedicated to the Red Cliff Band, who tragically lost Wolf 813 this past year.
Here is a quick recap that includes all our Wolf Awareness Week content:
- “Sign-up Sunday” - Our social media posts on Facebook, Instagram & X featured photos from wildlife photographer, Deby Dixon, with educational wolf pack facts!
- “Ma'iingan Monday” - Honoring the legacy of Wolf 813, we heard from:
- Elder Marvin Defoe of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians shared his thoughts on the significance of Ma'iingan. Watch the video here
- Ron Nordin, Jr., a Wildlife Technician from Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians shared his experiences with Wolf 813, what we learned from her, and how her legacy lives on today. Watch the video here
- Additionally, to better understand the story of Wolf 813, we recommend watching More than a Wolf. A Short Film: Wolf 813.
- “Talk Wolves Tuesday” - We heard from National Sierra Club leaders and discussed the latest on national wolf legislation updates and our campaign efforts to protect wolves across the country. Watch the video here
- “Wolf Country” Wednesday - Watch our presentation from Genevieve Adamski, Wildlife Specialist with the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Learn about her role, her monitoring of Tribal wolves (including Wolf 813), and her work to reduce farm conflicts.
- “Theatre Preview” Thursday - We featured the film; People & Wolves. A story of coexistence. For centuries, the Ojibwe have lived alongside their brother Ma’iingan, who we know in English to be the wolf. In February 2021, a Brutal assault, a hunt on their wolf relative, stirs emotion and grief for Ma’iingan as they know what happens to him will happen to them. Watch the film trailer here.
- “Fun with Wolves” Friday - A day filled with different activities including:
- Check out this year’s Wolf Advocate Coloring Page. Color it yourself and share with others—coloring is for all ages!
- Learn how to draw a wolf! Art for Kids Hub - How to Draw a Wolf
- Take a fun quiz: What wolf pack do you belong in? Quiz: What wolf pack do you belong in? - Environmental Action
- “Wolf Story” Saturday - We featured a video with Dr. Huw Lewis-Jones discussing his new book, Are Wolves Afraid of the Dark? This beautiful book is packed with little-known facts about wolves' family lives, eating habits, and their connection to domestic dogs. Readers will discover the secret lives of wolves and how to protect them.
