Wildlife Team Celebrates International Beaver Day – April 7, 2024

Beginning in 2008, A group of devoted conservationists, sometimes referred to as “beaver believers”, decided a day was needed to raise public awareness about the importance of beavers in our ecosystems, and the wide-ranging benefits they bring to the overall health of the environment.

This year to honor International Beaver Day, the Wisconsin Chapter Wildlife Team engaged in a variety of activities to help bring awareness to the ecological value that beavers provide on the landscape.

Here are some of the highlights from the day:

  • The team was successful in getting letters to the editor published in six different outlets across Wisconsin and even into neighboring Duluth Minnesota. This includes one letter going viral on social media being shared all over the country inspiring even more awareness!
  • A beaver blitz of cute photos along with important beaver facts were shared for two days across the Wisconsin chapter social media platforms.  (Check them out on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter)

How do beaver-created wetland habitats benefit ecosystems?
  • On April 6th we hosted a table at the Trout Unlimited event in Hayward, WI.  It was a great opportunity to discuss beaver benefits and build relationships with other outdoor enthusiasts.
  • The Wildlife Team created a SCWI Beaver Flyer.pdf1.8 MB that outlines the values beavers provide and corrects many misunderstandings people have about beavers. For example, beavers are vegetarian, and don’t eat fish!

Thanks to the help of our grassroots network of volunteer efforts, this document has been shared with nature centers and educators across Wisconsin in the hope it will continue to create a ripple effect of beaver appreciation.
