Our Sustainable Farming Practices Booklet is out now!
Incorporating sustainable farming practices plays an important role in protecting the environment and Wisconsinites access to clean water. For instance, buffers made up of vegetation act as barriers limiting nutrient, pesticide, and sediment runoff into the nearby water and soil. Targeted fertilizer, crop rotation, and polyculture all have the ability to reduce nitrate runoff as they reduce the amount of fertilizer used. Nitrate runoff is harmful to the environment and to our health for a number of reasons. Targeted fertilizer is giving plants fertilizer based on how much each type needs as opposed to giving all plants the same amount. Crop rotation is planting different items in a specific field each year. Polyculture is growing multiple types of crops as opposed to planting just one type. No-till farming prevents disturbances to the land that leads to soil erosion.
