Can We Save Snohomish County Forests?
The goal is not to stop all logging, just to save the most mature forests with the greatest value for carbon sequestration and biodiversity.
The state Department of Natural Resources has put six more mature forests up for sale, violating the state Environmental Policy Act and ignoring the impact of deforestation on climate. Four of those forests are in Snohomish County. Help fight for trees, contact forest champion Kate Lunceford: kurlykate888@gmail.com

This is a big deal and public input is important. Pay attention to the information and opportunities for feedback your city and county are sharing.
Recent state legislation that requires planning for increased density in urban areas is of special interest to many. Protecting natural areas and farmlands from development is another critical focus for public input. You can make a difference. |

Tidal Marshes Crucial for Salmon Recovery |
|
Historically, the Stillaguamish River contained more than 70% of Puget Sound delta habitat. Today only about 30% of that remains functional estuary. The rest has been paved over, filled, diked, farmed, or otherwise developed. But this type of habitat is what young Chinook Salmon need for growing before migrating from fresh water to the ocean. Consequently, the river's Chinook runs are threatened.
Fortunately, people are working to undo the damage to this area as well as other Puget Sound tidal marshes. Meadowdale Beach is a good example of a completed project; Spencer Island and the Edmonds estuary are examples of hope for the future. |
|
The Nature Conservancy has been working to restore 150 acres at Port Susan Bay into functional tidal marsh habitat for salmon. |
