Tulalip Tribes' Aaron Jones on Climate Mitigation and Treaty Rights

Third Thursday Meeting & Social

The Tulalip Tribes are in the forefront of efforts to mitigate and adapt to our region’s changing climate. What can we learn from their strategies? How are they working with other entities to safeguard and enhance their treaty rights and our shared public lands? And how can we collaborate to ensure a healthy Puget Sound ecosystem?

Join guest speaker Aaron Jones, Tulalip Treaty Rights Protection Specialist, to learn what the Tulalip Tribes are doing to take climate action and continue their stewardship of environmental resources.

Stop Fracked Gas Pipeline Expansion

TC Energy (the company behind the infamous Keystone XL pipeline) wants to add 150 million cubic feet of fracked methane gas per day to their existing 1354-mile-long Gas Transmission NW Xpress Pipeline. The result would be approximately 3.24 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, not counting the upstream methane leakage.

We have until June 15 to contact our senators and ask them to join the opposition to this dangerous and unneeded project.

Breach Snake River Dams to Save Salmon

Tell President Biden's Council on Environmental Quality and other involved federal agencies that removing the dams is essential to salmon recovery. The Biden administration is in the final stages of determining their recommendations for a comprehensive plan to protect and restore salmon and steelhead in the Columbia Basin.

Save the Sultan Watershed from Logging

Ask the Snohomish County Council to request that the Department of Natural Resources delay the timber sale in the area called Hog Wild. The delay will allow time for development of a management plan that could result in a Trust Land Transfer for the proposed Sultan Watershed Conservation Area.

The focus area is a mature forest with 500-800 year old trees, an endangered Steelhead run and a Pink Salmon run. Attend a League of Woman Voters forest protection meeting to learn more; the next meeting is Thursday, June 15 at 2 pm.

This is your opportunity to learn from and be entertained by acclaimed nature experts Tony Angell and John Marzluff. Angell is a nature artist, author, illustrator, and educator. Marzluff is a crow and raven researcher from the University of Washington who famously documented crow behavior toward humans.

Admission is $30, benefitting the NW Stream Center Sustainable Infrastructure Campaign.

Why to Beware of "Biomass" Companies

Watch this one-minute video at your leisure and spread the word about what you learned. Biomass companies greenwash their work by pointing out that no fossil fuels are burned; but they cut down forests and burn trees for power, in the process emitting more carbon than fossil fuels. Despite claims to the contrary, biomass is NOT clean energy. Cut carbon. Not forests.

Outings: May’s Third Thursday Outings Meeting Success!

Outings Leaders’ Training in Progress

We’re reviving our outings program which paused during the pandemic. Our trainers are prepared. Several volunteers have signed up to train and have started training this month. After they’ve completed their training, they will assist a certified leader on an outing, such as a nearby hike. When they’re ready, they’ll lead an outing along with an experienced certified leader who will ensure that the new leader has achieved the program goals to provide everyone a safe, educational, and fulfilling experience.

We’ll announce outings soon! They will be posted on our Meetup site and our Events Calendar. Successful Protests by Whidbey Students

The Vocalize Our Future protests led by United Student Leaders of Whidbey have come to a close. Students worked hard to spread the message about the climate emergency and the threat to the future of young people, with hope that more people will get involved in trying to solve the problem. Media coverage helped with the process.
