We all want to reduce waste and many of us are doing a darn good job of it.  Waste affects climate change and resource depletion; as well as related problems with toxic chemicals and plastic pollution.  Learn about a variety of ways we’re encouraging reducing waste with helpful legislation and policies.  

Heather Trim, Executive Director of Zero Waste Washington will bring us up to date and reveal the role of local litter assessments.

Help Tribes Save Salmon

The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians unanimously support Idaho Representative Simpson's proposal to breach four Snake River dams. These 57 tribes are calling for a summit to focus attention on the crisis facing salmon and orca, inviting the Biden administration and Northwest Congressional members. They state: "We need to speak up now, and we need to speak up together."

Stop Subsidizing Fossil Fuels

Call on Congress to repeal fossil fuel subsidies now! Did you know that taxpayers still pay $15 billion in direct federal subsidies to the fossil fuel industry every year?  Congress must stop this by passing the End Polluter Welfare Act. Tell Senator Murray, Senator Cantwelland your Representative that this is urgent.  Read More
 
Take Action Against Covert Navy Training In State Parks
If you disagree with the Parks Commission approval of the Navy's proposal to use as many as 28 state parks for training, check out the Not In Our Parks Action page . Public comment was 8 to 1 against Navy training in parks, but the Parks Commission ignored public sentiment. Let's see if we can get their attention.

Skagit River Dam Relicensing Talk
Mon. June 14 at 7 pm

Join the Washington State Sierra Club Conservation Committee to hear about issues related to relicensing the three Skagit River dams. A new license will last for 30 to 50 years. Speakers are Tom O'Keefe from American Whitewater and Bridget Moran of Amercan Rivers. Join the  Zoom Meeting.

Celebrate Juneteenth In State Parks
Sat. June 19
 
Juneteenth will now be a free day at Washington state parks. June 19 is also known as Emancipation Day and Freedom Day; it commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and informed the last enslaved African Americans that they were free. Park Details.
Food As Climate Activism
Mon. June 28 at 7 pm

Pamela Bond, local Native American activist, will speak at the monthly Everett 350 meeting, discussing how eating and growing our food can be a political act.
Networking and socializing begins at 6:30.

Good News and Bad
Salmon Fry Released into Edmonds Creek

High school students in the Students Saving Salmon club recently released 2000 healthy young coho salmon into Edmonds' Shell Creek. The salmon were reared in the Willow Creek Fish Hatchery near the Edmonds Marsh. After a year in fresh water, they will move to salt water until coming back to spawn.

Toxic Chemicals in Your Garden Fertilizer?
 
You may be exposed to dangerous PFAS chemicals while using fertilizer products marketed as "eco" or "natural," according to a study by Sierra Club and the Ecology Center. These products are made from sewage sludge and the chemicals are not removed during sewage treatment. The long-lasting chemicals can also contaminate crops grown with the fertilizers and threaten our food supply. Read More
