Strategy Meeting to Protect Mature Forests
Tuesday, Jan. 9, 10 to 11 am. on Zoom
Decisions will be made this month about which lands to protect in Snohomish County. Meet with League of Woman Voters forest champion Kate Lunceford to find out how you can help.
The 2024 legislature convenes January 8. This short session will end March 7, so you can be sure the action will be fast and furious. We can adopt a Green Amendment in our state; it will change how we think about and pursue environmental protection and environmental justice from both a policy and a legal perspective. Meet with Maya Van Rossum to learn about new developments in the effort. Maya has the skill and experience to help us get this done in Washington State.
Center for Responsible Forestry vs Dept. of Natural Resources
The CRF is taking the Department of Natural Resources back to court. DNR has consistently violated its commitment to protect older forests. Instead the agency has aggressively logged the very forests it must protect to meet stated old growth protection targets.
Recently a court case was found moot because all the trees had been cut down before the case was finally heard in court. Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz refuses to postpone logging until courts rule.
"Court cases should be decided by judges, not chainsaws." (CRF)
Hundreds of Trees Planted in Shoreline by Volunteers
A 3000 square foot vacant lot on the Shoreline Historical Museum property was recently planted with 1200 native plants. Three hundred volunteers showed up for the planting, with the intent to care for the seedlings over the next three years.
League of Women Voters participated, along with Plant Amnesty and Friends of Miyawaki Forests.
Everett Green Schools Work Group
The work group is part of the Sierra Club's 100% Clean Energy School Districts Campaign. They are working to make sustainability an integral component of school district culture. Their first accomplishment was to establish an on-going sustainability council of district and community representatives.
