The climate crisis is here. Every day brings more news about sea-level rise and climate-fueled disasters. Our task is clear and urgent: We must fight for each other—and this planet we call home.
Here at the Washington State Sierra Club, we work to stop fossil fuel projects in their tracks while building a new economic and energy system that provides economic security for all.
Sierra Club has bold goals nationally, including a 50% reduction in oil use, 100% carbon free grid by 2030, and transitioning our economy in ways that transform economic, racial and environmental inequity in parallel with other movements addressing injustice. Locally we seek to establish Washington State as a leader in demonstrating a Just Transition and shift in power to localized structures and economies that provide economic security for all Washingtonians.
In order to accomplish these goals, we are prioritizing three things:
-
Protecting Washington State From New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure
-
Building a Community-Driven Clean Energy Future
-
Advocating for Land Use and Transportation Policies that Invest in Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods
Firstly, we need to protect Washington State from new fossil fuel infrastructure or expansion and reduce existing fossil fuel use. We will continue to fight new development of gas resources from extraction, to transportation, to end use. We are also fighting to implement responsible clean energy strategies that prioritize vulnerable communities, provide steady jobs and benefit all the region’s inhabitants.
Secondly, we will generate a cost-effective, community-driven and efficient clean energy system and, to the extent energy resources remain in private monopoly companies, those companies are compelled to have inclusive and transparent planning and acquisition processes.
Thirdly, we are working to reduce carbon pollution by advancing transportation and land use policies that reduce climate pollution, improve public health outcomes, and create equitable access to economic opportunities. We strive to create affordable, walkable, transit-connected cities and neighborhoods with secure economic opportunities, electrified buildings, and vehicle infrastructure. Above all, we’re fighting to establish that affordable, clean energy is a basic human right. Join us!
