All around the world, youth climate activists are speaking out--our house is on fire and we need clean energy now! Let’s show students that change is possible and transition schools to 100% clean energy!
In addition to their climate impacts, fossil fuels directly impact our students. Students riding in diesel school buses, for instance, breathe in diesel exhaust. This kind of exposure contributes to high cancer risk- up to 46 times the cancer risk level considered significant under federal law. Unsurprisingly, studies have shown that learning outcomes are improved in school districts with reduced diesel exposure. Better indoor air quality and lighting in schools also improves academic performance and student health. We can make sure our students experience these benefits by moving to clean, renewable energy to power school buildings and vehicles.
Our schools are where we build the future. School buildings and transportation systems have huge potential in reducing emissions and modeling clean energy in communities. School districts that reduced fossil fuel emissions have seen improvements in student health and performance.
Clean energy is ready, and school boards are already making the switch. This year, inspired by student climate activists, the Seattle School board joined LA, Salt Lake City, and many others in committing to use 100% clean energy. Your school board can too!
As we build back better from this pandemic, let's make sure our schools are not only safe-- but also ensure the safety and livability of their students’ futures. The Sierra Club is working with interested school board members, parents, teachers, students, and climate advocates to bring clean energy to our schools.
