The deal includes weak environmental terms that have enabled outsourcing of pollution and jobs, fail to even mention climate change, roll back environmental standards from past trade deals, and include special handouts to oil and gas corporations.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the U.S. Trade Representative announced that it is moving forward without Canada on a proposed U.S.-Mexico trade agreement announced earlier this week. USTR announced that they will notify Congress of Trump’s intent to sign the new deal later this year, and noted that Canada will still be able to join the deal “if it is willing.” The draft deal reportedly includes weak environmental enforcement terms, fails to make any mention of climate change, and even offers special handouts to oil and gas corporations.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, various outlets are reporting that negotiators from the United States and Mexico announced they reached a preliminary agreement on a new North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that excludes Canada. Both Mexico and Canada have said that they will not finalize a bilateral deal with the U.S. but rather all three countries will need to agree to a trilateral agreement.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced May 17 as the deadline for the U.S. Trade Representative to reach a final agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico and send Congress the final text to review. Ryan said that without the final text by May 17, Congress will not be able to vote on NAFTA this year.
