Vote One More Time
Upcoming December ROLG "ExCom" Election
The "ExCom" is the Executive Committee (or Board) that decides what the Range of Light Group (ROLG) will do to further the Sierra Club mission to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet in Inyo and Mono Counties, its geographic area. The ExCom consists of three to six ROLG members who are volunteers elected for a two-year term. They meet as needed to decide what stand to take on local issues and what projects to get involved in. The ExCom supports committees formed by volunteers for projects, outings, or programs. The ExCom strives to educate the public and to get people involved in the Sierra Club.
Every December, the Sierra Club has elections for its members to vote for candidates running for any openings on their group and chapter ExComs. You will receive a postcard with instructions on how to vote electronically for the ROLG group. This year, there are three openings on the ROLG ExCom with two incumbents willing to serve on the board for another term. We would appreciate your vote to show your support for their continued work or for you to write in a candidate you would like to be on the board. If you are a member of the Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter, please vote.

If you want to see the Range of Light Group continue, please step forward and join us. Too much of the work is falling on only a handful of people. They have been fighting diligently to keep environmental threats at bay in the Eastern Sierra, to offer outings, and to improve communication with members and the public. If you would like the Sierra Club's time and attention focused on the Eastern Sierra, then please help by volunteering.

Update on Eastern Sierra Exploratory Drilling Projects
|
Hot Creek/Long Valley outside of Mammoth Lakes: No word yet from the judge whether the Inyo National Forest should require an environmental assessment or not. KORE Mining did not start drilling this fall. They could have. KORE Mining's stock price has fallen from a high of $0.50/share on November 17, 2021 to $0.03/share on November 11, 2022.
Conglomerate Mesa, Inyo Mountains: K2 Gold is proceeding with the project and has put up a $50,000 bond to get the Environmental Impact Statement started. It is expected to be released in January 2023 for public comment. K2 Gold's stock has dropped from a 2022 high of $0.26/share to $0.11/share on November 11, 2022.

Bald Peak, Nevada: A decision memo is expected in December. This project will probably be a categorical exclusion under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This is in a remote part of the Bodie Hills and will be accessed solely by helicopter. Paramount Nevada's stock has also dropped from a 2022 high of $1.10/share to $0.37/share on November 11, 2022.
Sawtooth Ridge at Aurora, Nevada: A decision memo is expected in November. This project was first proposed as a categorical exclusion under NEPA, but we have to wait until the decision memo is released to know if that will still be the case. Hundreds of mature, healthy pinyon trees will need to be removed.
Spring Peak/Aurora Peak, Nevada: Headwater Gold improved the road to the project site in October and drilled at one more site before the winter storm hit on November 8, 2022. Headwater Gold's website says they "found significant gold values" in four of the five drill holes they drilled last summer. Their stock has gone up from $0.25/share at the the start of 2022 to $0.315 on November 14, 2022. They have also been staking more claims in the area. This is one to watch carefully.

Where Should Renewable Energy Projects Go?
California is making a serious effort to reach 100% renewable energy by 2045 in order to lessen the impact of climate change.
The state has upgraded its building code, is expanding its electric vehicle infrastructure, and more. Now the state is planning where transmission lines and substations will be needed for future large-scale renewable energy projects. A good thing. The California Energy Commission released a map of potential sites in California where large-scale solar and wind projects could be developed that would avoid areas in the state with high conservation values.
