New Newsletter, New Website!
The Range of Light Group has changed its newsletter format to be able to incorporate photos and diagrams using the Sierra Club’s media tools. We are grateful for the years that Shalle Genevieve has put in to producing the ROLG newsletter up to this point and thank her for her dedication as she passes the task on to someone else. The ROLG website has also been revamped. We've included a "Climate Change Corner" to update you on what can be done in the Eastern Sierra to reduce its carbon footprint.
There are a lot of environmental issues hitting this area. Please contact us if you would like to help. We'd love it and need your help!
Thank you. |
Support Us on October 13!
At the Mono County Board of Supervisors Meeting
The Ready for 100% Renewable Energy team working with the High Sierra Foundation will be making a presentation to the Mono County Board of Supervisors Tuesday, October 13, at 1pm on microgrids and exciting grant opportunities that could fund solar and microgrids for disaster preparedness.
A microgrid is way to "island-off" the grid and provide power for basic essential services in a building during a power outage using a combination of solar panels, battery storage, and a smart controller. We envision a microgrid system in the town of Mammoth Lakes for the new Civic Center (disaster command center), Mammoth Hospital, the schools (the emergency shelter), and the police station.
Please come, support us, and find out what’s possible! |

Welcome Kris Hohag!
When Fran Hunt retired in March as the first ever Senior Organizer for the Sierra Club in our area; we Range of Light members worried about who possibly could fill her very caring and exceedingly competent shoes. Fortunately, the national office has hired Kris Hohag, who from our recent interview, appears more than ready to do that plus make some notable footprints of his own. Find out more... |

They have opened an office in Lone Pine and are pitching the benefits of this project to the Inyo County Supervisors. If you live in Inyo County, please let your supervisor know that you want to save the mesa from mining. We also have yards signs if you want to put one up. Read more...
And A Joshua Tree Climate Change Refugia
On September 22, the California Fish and Game Commission (FGC) approved a staff recommendation to list the western Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) as a candidate species under CESA (California Endangered Species Act). Tangle Free Waters Gets High Score
Tangle Free Waters (TFW) is a program to reduce, remove and recycle fishing line from Eastern Sierra waterways. The idea for this program came from members of the Range of Light Group who passed the idea on to Matt Paruolo of Mammoth Lakes Recreation for implementation. Matt obtained a grant from the Mono County Wildlife Commission that covers the building, installation and signage for Fishing Line Recycling Tubes (FLRTS) at fishing hot spots and has been busy building and installing FLRTS. A key element of the program will be to sign up volunteers to adopt and/or maintain them. If you want to help remove line or adopt a tube, sign up at: https://mammothlakesrecreation.org/tangle-free-waters-2/. Read on...
