Starting in 2017, we have created a new Patch Award Program for those interested in completing the Joshua Tree California Riding & Hiking Trail that winds through the Park covering 37.3 miles in total. This portion of the trail is older than the Pacific Crest Trail. In 1945 legislation to establish the trail was passed in California. The original plan was for a 3,000 mile multi-use loop trail starting in San Diego and running to the Oregon Border, with one side of the loop in the Sierras and the other over toward the coast. The trail was not necessarily intended to be as remote or wilderness focused as the PCT is, as some segments were to run along existing dirt roads etc. with some developed campgrounds being built for equestrians and hikers. In 1974, the plan to build the trail was repealed; however, some sections of the trail remain in use.
One of the most well-known segments of the trail is in the NW corner of Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP), where 37.3 miles of the trail runs from the Black Rock trailhead to the North Entrance station.
By completing all 37.3 miles, lead by Big Bear Hike Leaders, you will earn a Patch commemorating your accomplishment. (See patch below)
The California Riding and Hiking Trail Schedule for 2017, modified a bit by the rainy winter, is as follows:
January 21, Fourth Segment
February 4, Second Segment
March 4, First Segment
March 18, Third Segment
