Marin Group Accomplishments

Thanks to everyone on our wonderful team for making our goals become achievements!

2018 Accomplishments

The Sierra Club Marin Group was actively involved in or sponsored:

• Public Testimony in support of Marin City and the results of the Resilient by Design Team

• Chance Cutrano, Marin Group’s Treasurer, and co-chair of the Climate Change and Political committees,  was awarded the inaugural "Emerging Leader" award for outstanding contributions to conservation and politics by someone under the age of 20 at the annual 2018 Sierra Club conference. 

•Sponsored and organized the 2018 Time to Lead on Climate event, “Getting to Paris Without Stopping in Washington”, at College of Marin with speakers including architect of the United Nations Paris Climate Agreement Christiana Figueres, California EPA Secretary Matt Rodriquez, Berkeley Professor Daniel Kammen, Congressman Jared Huffman and other local climate leaders.

• Launched our new “Climate Solutions Committee” helmed by Co-chairs, Barbara Bogard and Chance Cutrano.

• The Climate Solutions Committee organized and advocated for the successful pass of a new single-use plastic ordinance banning single-use plastic disposable foodware items (forks, spoons, knives, cups, lids, and to-go containers).

• Over 80% of Sierra Club endorsed candidates in June and November elections in 2018 were elected to public office in Marin County.

• Successfully advocated for Ross Valley Sanitary District and Central Marin Sanitation Agency to move their municipal accounts to 100% renewable energy with MCE’s Deep Green.

 

2017 Accomplishments

The Sierra Club Marin Group was actively involved in or sponsored:

• The County authorization to purchase the San Geronimo Golf Course

• The Golden Gate Village National Historic Registry listing 

• The benefit for the Standing Rock Legal Defense Fund 

• Marin People's Climate Mobilization

• Singing for a Better World

• Removal of glyphosate from the 2018 Approved Pesticide List by the county IPM Commission

• Engaging National and Bay Area SC leaders in Point Reyes Seashore General Management Plan update

• Joining in solidarity with other Marin environmental organizations supporting the County purchase of the Golf Course

• Collaborating on numerous Salmon protection strategies 

• Working to increase protections for nesting birds in the NPS

• Working with Bay Chapter Energy Committee and Chapter staff to get all eleven Marin cities plus the County to adopt 100% renewable energy through MCE's Deep Green option

• Getting Novato to become the first Marin city (hopefully of many) to take go 100% renewable as a goal for the entire community as part of the Sierra Club's ReadyFor100 campaign

• Co-hosting a successful fundraiser with the SF Bay Chapter in May 2017
