TEMPE, AZ -- Today the Salt River Project (SRP) Board of Directors voted to approve its Integrated System Plan (ISP) strategies which will guide how the utility plans to generate its power. These proposed strategies will mean SRP will continue to rely on coal and will add more harmful gas-fired plants that will exacerbate the water crisis, drive costs up for ratepayers, and contribute to the climate crisis.

On Friday, Sierra Club took a significant step in its ongoing effort to compel the EPA to enforce federal air quality standards set nearly a decade ago under the Obama administration by filing a lawsuit that requires EPA to recognize the failure of many states to submit compliance plans for reducing smog levels in their communities.

Washington, DC –  Tonight, just a few short hours before Congressional Republicans’ threat to shut down the federal government would become a reality, Congress passed a clean bipartisan, short-term continuing resolution that would continue government operations through November 17, 2023.

The Department of Energy (DOE) released its final rule setting Congressionally-mandated energy efficiency standards for gas furnaces, which will reduce air pollution and lower gas utility bills by $1.5 billion annually. The standard, which had not been meaningfully updated since it was first set by Congress in 1987, will apply to new gas furnaces on the market starting in 2028.
