Washington, DC – Tonight, just a few short hours before Congressional Republicans’ threat to shut down the federal government would become a reality, Congress passed a clean bipartisan, short-term continuing resolution that would continue government operations through November 17, 2023.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“Once again, Republicans in Congress have purposefully taken us to the brink of disaster in an attempt to force upon the American people their radical proposals that would defund or dismantle so much of what our government does to protect us and our environment. Time and time again these individuals have shown a willingness to take our government hostage in order to undo the progress we’ve made to build a green economy that can lift all boats and protect our planet for future generations. I commend Congressional Democrats for not giving in to reckless demands that would endanger us all, and I hope that Kevin McCarthy and his extreme MAGA acolytes can somehow come to their senses before we end up back in this same sorry situation come mid-November.”
