Annapolis, M.D.--Thanks to the efforts of the Maryland General Assembly, the Clean Energy Jobs Act (CEJA) will become law. The bill will accelerate the state’s Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) to 50% by 2030 and include a huge leap in solar energy combined with quadrupling the state’s commitment to offshore wind. Additionally, the bill will provide funding for small, minority, veteran, and women-owned businesses, and require the state to develop a pathway to reach 100% renewable energy by 2040. On the coattails of the bill becoming law, Governor Hogan officially committed to introducing legislation in the 2020 session that would move Maryland to 100% clean energy by 2040.

esterday, media outlets reported that former coal lobbyist and EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler sent a memo to several EPA offices, directing them to change how they calculate cost and benefits for environmental protection in an effort to undercut the agency’s use of peer reviewed science in the development of new rules.

Aberdeen, Scotland -- At BP’s annual meeting this morning, shareholders passed a resolution calling for the company to lay out a business strategy consistent with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. The resolution was supported by BP’s board and passed with 99% of the vote. A second resolution that would have required the company to set targets for reducing emissions from the use of the oil and gas it produces and sells did not pass.

Washington, DC-- Today, Sierra Club chapters, members and supporters across the country participated in a nationwide day of action to protest the recent abortion bans proposed and signed into law across the country. Several states-- including Alabama, Missouri and Georgia among others-- have proposed some of the most restrictive laws on abortion and women’s right to choose in recent memory.
