The City Council Unanimously Approved the Groundbreaking Gas Ban Ordinance Last night, the Berkeley City Council voted to unanimously approve a groundbreaking ordinance that prohibits the installation of polluting gas infrastructure for new buildings. The ordinance also received public support from both local energy providers -- East Bay Community Energy (EBCE) and Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). In Berkeley, residents receive electricity that is 78-100% carbon free.

Today, Mayor Tim Kabat joined local leaders in announcing the City of La Crosse’s goal to transition to 100% clean, renewable energy. On July 11, the La Crosse City Council unanimously passed a resolution establishing a goal of 100% clean, renewable energy across the city by 2050.

ATLANTA, GA.—State regulators today voted to approve Georgia Power’s newest long-term energy plan, formalizing the utility’s retirement of two polluting coal plants and adding 2 gigawatts of solar resources, enough to power more than 200,000 homes.

SPRINGDALE, PA-- Today, the Sierra Club sent a “notice of intent to sue” letter to NRG Power Midwest alleging serious violations of the Clean Water Act (CWA) at the company’s Cheswick coal-fired power plant in Springdale. The plant has been discharging heated wastewater into the Allegheny River at temperatures over nine-times what is currently allowed--potentially affecting the waterway’s local ecosystem and killing aquatic species.

Oscoda, MI-- Today, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is holding a public meeting after announcing a non-binding, verbal agreement with the Air Force. Both parties controversially claimed the agreement would speed the cleanup of PFAS contamination at the closed Wurtsmith Air Force base in the area-- an area where surrounding communities have long suffered with contaminated water.

Today, PacifiCorp announced that it will be pushing back its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) filing date from August 1 to October 18. The plan was originally supposed to be filed April 1. The utility has been studying the economics of its coal fleet since August 2018, presenting new information at monthly public information meetings.
