JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the United States, has announced an updated energy policy that rules out financing for new oil and gas drilling in the Arctic, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The policy also rules out financing for new thermal coal mines and coal-fired power projects worldwide, though the bank failed to put any restrictions on other oil and gas, including fracking and controversial tar sands projects.

Local residents, the city of Port Isabel, and Sierra Club today filed suit against the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for authorizing construction of the highly polluting Rio Grande LNG fracked gas facility and Rio Bravo Pipeline proposed for a site on the Gulf Coast near Port Isabel.

Commissioner McNamee stated that FERC needed more time to review permit denials from the State of Oregon, including last night’s Coastal Zone permit denial, while Commissioner Glick said the project was not in the public interest.

Following a multi-million dollar settlement with the owner of the E.D. Edwards coal plant, Peoria-area organizations met today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church to celebrate the grants being awarded as part of the settlement process. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit and three community partner organizations who advised during the selection process announced a wide range of projects that will help the community transition as the plant prepares to retire.
