Portland, OR — Yesterday, Oregon’s Public Utility Commission (PUC) announced support of PacifiCorp’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to keep expensive and heavily-polluting coal plants powering Oregon communities for several more decades. This verbal vote to acknowledge the plan is expected to be formally approved in the coming weeks. PacifiCorp is the parent company of Pacific Power, which operates across Oregon, Washington, and California.

We must protect 30% of lands and waters in the United States by 2030, also known as ‘America the Beautiful.’ In addition to fighting the climate crisis, conserving more nature provides a myriad of health benefits, protections for vulnerable wildlife and plant species, diversification and growth of local economies, and communities’ increased access to nature. The Sierra Club calls on the Department of the Interior (DOI) to act quickly and protect 30% of this nation's lands by 2030.

Washington, DC – Yesterday, President Biden unveiled his FY2023 budget, which requests $1.6 trillion in federal funding for the 2023 fiscal year. The proposed budget includes the largest funding request ever for the EPA, Department of Energy, and Department of the Interior. At the crux of the budget is adjusting the tax code to ensure the wealthiest billionaires pay their fair share, efforts to address inflation, and a repeal of fossil fuel subsidies.

The decision by the Biden Administration to approve this request will create an immediate effect on nearly 80% of US crystalline-silicon modules shipped from the region, creating ramifications throughout the country on the 230,000 Americans that work in the solar industry.
