HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Today, Governor Josh Shapiro announced the Pennsylvania Reliable Energy Sustainability Standard (PRESS), his proposal to update the 2004 Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards (AEPS). Forward looking at the time of its adoption, the AEPS requires Pennsylvania utilities and electricity suppliers to purchase minimum amounts of electricity from renewable or alternative sources and includes mostly clean renewable energy like wind and solar in Tier I, and dirtier alternatives like energy from waste coal and trash incineration in Tier II.

NEW YORK -- Today, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) awarded the fourth round of offshore wind power purchase agreements to Empire Wind 1 (Equinor) and Sunrise Wind (Orsted and Eversource). The development of Empire Wind 1 will provide 810 megawatts of energy and Sunrise Wind will provide 924 megawatts of energy, which together will power one million homes in New York once operational. Sunrise Wind is expected to be operational in 2026 and Empire Wind 1 in 2027.

Washington, DC – Today, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced $366 million to fund a variety of clean energy projects across the country. The money, from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s “Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas (ERA)” program, funds 17 projects that serve 20 states and 30 tribal nations and communities.

NEW ORLEANS, La. — After years of dedicated work, clean air advocates in Louisiana scored a victory with the approved retirements of two large coal-fired power plants. Yesterday, the Louisiana Public Service Commission voted to approve Entergy Louisiana’s long-range energy plan, known as an Integrated Resource Plan. The IRP includes the retirements of Big Cajun 2 Unit 3 in 2025 and RS Nelson Unit 6 in 2028. These are the 378th and 379th coal plants to announce a retirement since the start of Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign.
