Sierra Club Statement on Updated Biden Climate Commitment

Washington, DC – Today, the Biden Administration announced a new target for the United States to achieve a 61-66 percent reduction from 2005 levels in economy-wide net greenhouse gas pollution in 2035. The emissions target – known as the “nationally determined contribution” or “NDC,” is a formal submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In response to today’s announcement, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Leaders lead, and that is exactly what the United States is doing today. President Biden has made it clear that freedom must include the freedom to live a healthy life – and we cannot go backwards. Today’s announcement is an important step forward in the fight to avert the very worst of the climate crisis, and we thank President Biden and his administration for their continued commitment to ensuring the United States puts our freedom and our future above multibillion dollar corporations' astronomical profits. We have an imperative to act, and no serious leader can or should ignore it.”
