New York, NY -- On June 26, 2024, Danskammer LLC withdrew its request for a siting certificate for a proposed gas plant in the Hudson Valley, marking the end of the last large-scale gas generation project proposed in New York. This withdrawal follows the cancellations of the Astoria and Gowanus gas peaker plants in New York City.

In response, Josh Berman, Senior Attorney with Sierra Club, released the following statement:

“For the past six years, Sierra Club, represented by Earthjustice and in partnership with local groups, has been opposing the Danskammer plant as incompatible with New York’s low-carbon future. We actively participated in the siting process, provided expert testimony, and demonstrated the project’s inconsistency with New York’s climate laws and its burden on disadvantaged communities while generating over 11,000 public comments.

“With this final gas proposal off the table, New York should be looking towards a cleaner, more sustainable way to meet energy needs. Offshore wind, land-based renewables, and the recently-approved energy storage procurement process will help New York meet the climate challenge while protecting public health and contributing to a thriving economy for decades to come.”
