Washington, DC – Tom Suozzi has been re-elected to the U.S. House, winning last night’s special election to represent the people of New York’s Third Congressional District. Sierra Club endorsed Suozzi and our local group leaders actively mobilized Sierra Club members in this critical race.
“Voters in New York turned out to elect a proven climate champion who will fight for clean air, clean water, and protect our public lands for everyone,” said Nidhi Khanna, Sierra Club’s Federal PAC Director. “The residents of Long Island and Northeast Queens have elected a representative that will bring honesty and decency back to this seat. We are eager to work with Congressman-elect Suozzi once again to fight for a more sustainable future for us all.”
First elected to the House in 2016, Suozzi knows how vulnerable this district is to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and more frequent and intense storms.
"Residents of northeast Queens are no strangers to the impacts of climate change. As extreme weather events like cloudbursts become more frequent, we need elected officials like Congressman-elect Suozzi who have the skills and experience to address climate change now and protect our communities for the future," said Karl Palmquist, chairperson of the Sierra Club New York City Group and NY-03 resident.
In Congress, Suozzi’s vote was critical in passing the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest-ever federal investment in clean energy and environmental justice.
"The volunteer activity surrounding this crucial race was energizing – we were on the ground and heard from our neighbors,” said Mallory Rutigliano, vice-chairperson of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter and NY-03 resident. Congressman-elect Suozzi was the best candidate for our environment, which is more important than ever as New York faces myriad threats, from wildfire smoke to flooding streets."
