LANSING, MICHIGAN-- Last night, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bills 4069, 4465, and Senate Bill 47 which eliminate property tax increases for residential, commercial, and industrial customers who install rooftop solar, moving Michigan one step closer to dismantling a key disincentive for distributed solar. The Michigan House and Senate approved these bills across bipartisan lines in near-unanimous votes.
In response, Thomas Gilpin, Legislative Chair with the Sierra Club Michigan Chapter released the following statement:
"Generating electricity from a renewable source like solar reduces pollution in our air and water. Making it simpler for Michigan homeowners and businesses to install rooftop solar is a win for the environment and a win for public health. We commend the work and support from both the state legislature and our governor on this important issue. By bringing clarity and consistency to our property taxation rules for everyone, we are removing barriers to solar which will improve our economic stability, provide good-paying jobs, and will empower people to make decisions about the energy they use."
