On October 30th, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) greenlighted half of New York's coal plants for retirement. NYISO announced that the Huntley and Dunkirk coal plants were no longer necessary for grid reliability with the planned improvements to the U.S. National Grid and transmission systems in Chautauqua and Niagara counties.
The Sierra Club's Beyond Coal team in New York has since worked to translate this victory into a commitment from Governor Andrew Cuomo for a just transition beyond coal within the decade.
