As a member of the No LNG Exports statewide coalition, and of the Power Past Fracked Gas regional coalition, it's a key priority of the Oregon Sierra Club to help defeat the Jordan Cove LNG terminal in Coos Bay and Pacific Connector Pipeline through Southern Oregon, officially known as the Jordan Cove Energy Project. Over a 12-year campaign, this project has already been defeated twice, but with a fossil-fuel-friendly Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the zombie project has arisen again.
Pembina, a Canadian energy company, has been working for over a decade on the massive fossil fuel infrastructure plan to export fracked gas from Canada and the Rockies through southern Oregon and onto ships bound for Asia from Coos Bay. This plan would involve the construction of the 229-mile Pacific Connector pipeline and permanent 95-foot wide clear cut through southwest Oregon’s forests, farms, and salmon filled rivers including the Rogue and Umpqua.
Before it can be built, the project must obtain a raft of permits from a host of federal and state agencies. The Department of State Lands' comment period just closed on February 3rd, and the statewide coalition sent in an unprecedented 45,000 comments (35,406 of these from people like YOU with the Sierra Club!) Great work. Stay tuned for more on how to get involved.
In November 2018, over 70 landowners, communitiy organizers, tribal members, students, and activists (including 4 Oregon Sierra Club staff and volunteers!) gathered in Southern OR for an annual strategy meeting.
