Conservation Committee

The Conservation Committee is involved in establishing the Chapter as a powerful voice in environmental work in the state. It provides an opportunity for groups, sections, and individual members to become involved in conservation activities. The Chapter Conservation Program furthers the conservation objectives and priorities of the Club within Chapter boundaries, assists in regional Club actions, and provides for the development and execution of specific conservation strategies and action programs authorized by the Executive Committee.

The Conservation Committee helps shape policy by researching and providing policy recommendations to the Policy Strategist. Among its duties are (1) responding to requests for the Chapter to take positions on conservation issues, campaigns, or legislation and (2) providing recommendations for priority issues and helping develop campaign strategy. The committee meets at least 10 times per year, and if you’re interested in joining us,

The Conservation Committee is committed to supporting volunteer leaders to make the changes we need to heal and protect Ecological Systems and create a Just, Inclusive, Equitable, and Sustainable future. We report to the Chapter’s Executive Committee and use the Oregon Integrated Plan as one of our guiding documents. The Conservation Committee helps shape Chapter policy by making an annual recommendation to the ExCom on Chapter Priorities for their approval. Here are the 2021 Priorities. Using these Chapter Priorities, the Conservation Committee:

  • Responds to requests for the Chapter to take positions on conservation issues and campaigns, by signing on to group letters or creating letters from the Chapter

  • Works with volunteer teams from Chapter to support their campaigns

  • Coordinates with the conservation work of Groups and Sections

  • Recruits and supports issue area volunteers and teams

  • Coordinates with the work of the Legislative and Political Committees of the Chapter

  • Recruits and supports volunteers to represent the Chapter in collaborations with other Sierra Club teams and other conservation organizations

The committee meets at least 10 times per year. If you’re interested in joining us, please contact ConservationCommittee@oregon.sierraclub.org  or 541-554-6979.
