Nation’s Largest Grassroots Environmental Group Praises Jayapal’s Work to Protect Oregon’s Environment
Today, the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Susheela Jayapal (Democrat running for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District) in the May 2024 Primary Election.
"We are pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorses Susheela Jayapal for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District," said John Talik, Political Chair of the Sierra Club Oregon Chapter. "We are confident that she will continue to work with us to protect public health, air and water, and build a clean energy economy that works for Oregonians."
We are at a critical moment. As the Inflation Reduction Act — the largest investment in clean energy and climate action to date — continues to be implemented, it is more important than ever to elect champions like Susheela Jayapal who will prioritize our communities and our future. Susheela Jayapal has been a critical leader on the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners in addressing diesel emissions, identifying the harms to families’ health from gas appliances in homes, and suing 17 of the world’s largest fossil fuel companies for their role in causing climate disasters including the deadly 2021 heat dome that claimed the lives of 69 people in Multnomah County.
"We are deeply grateful to Susheela Jayapal for her work in holding fossil fuel companies accountable for climate change, deadly oil trains, and air pollution," continued Talik. "Susheela Jayapal is a true environmental champion who will work together with our communities in Congress to protect Oregon’s air, water, and natural places. She is the right choice for Oregonians as Congressman Earl Blumenauer finishes serving the people of District 3.”
Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Susheela Jayapal’s campaign. Sierra Club members will work hard in the coming months to get out the vote and ensure that Susheela Jayapal wins the Democratic Primary on May 21st.
