Fracked Gas Power Plants

New Jersey Transit Cancels Its Proposed Kearny Power Plant while Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission continues to “Power On”

Our voices have been heard!  New Jersey Transit announced that it has cancelled its plans to build a 24/7 fracked gas power plant in Kearny, and has worked with FEMA to reallocate the funds for the power plant to rebuild bridges and track to ensure they can withstand Sandy level flooding in the future.  Although it took 5 years of constant public comment and action, NJ Transit finally agreed that the proposed plant would not only add pollution and green house gases to an already overburdened communities in Hudson and Essex Counties, but that the plant was not economically viable.

Unfortunately, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission is still moving forward with its proposed power plant right in the heart of the Ironbound community in Newark.  Before Tammy Murphy withdrew from as a candidate for Senator Menendez’ seat, she issued a press release opposed to the plant, but her husband, the Governor, still has not committed to requiring the Commission to drop the proposed plant and invest in renewable energy alternatives.  We will keep on fighting until that happens.
