ICO/Sierra Club Policies

Leader Training
Volunteers who want to become certified outing leaders undergo a criminal background check, DMV check (if driving), basic or wilderness-level first-aid instruction, and outdoor leadership training. They also are mentored by experienced ICO leaders, who accompany them on outings and help them feel ready to lead trips on their own. In addition, each ICO group conducts annual or biannual leadership trainings based on standard training materials distributed by the national Sierra Club that cover topics such as, group management, pre-trip planning, safety management, and conducting environmental education activities. Learning how to teach outdoor skills, such as setting up and taking down tents, cooking on camping stoves, and practicing camp hygiene, and how to impart knowledge about an area’s ecology are all part of the ICO experience. The Sierra Club also provides training events to help ICO’s group chairs further enhance their leadership skills.

Automobile Liability Coverage:  The Automobile Liability coverage protects the Sierra Club against claims involving vehicles that are owned or rented by employees and volunteers and used for authorized Club business.  An employee/volunteer's personal auto insurance policy is primary in the event of a claim.  The Club’s insurance may cover claims of bodily injury and property damage (excluding the vehicle driven) AFTER the employee/volunteer's personal insurance limits have been exhausted (but only to the extent it is the Club’s liability).  It does not protect against physical damage to employee/volunteer vehicles or to rented vehicles.  When you rent a vehicle for use on Sierra Club authorized business, you must sign the rental contract "Your Name/Sierra Club".  Also, when renting a vehicle for a Sierra Club authorized activity, you must purchase the collision damage and the supplemental liability insurance offered by the rental agency. Important:  Club policy requires that any persons using their personal cars or driving cars belonging to others on Club business or outings must have a valid driver's license, have at least the minimum liability insurance coverage that meets the standards required by the Department of Motor Vehicles in the respective state, and have property damage insurance. This is required for your own protection.
