Explore, protect, and enjoy the plane
The Prince George’s Sierra Club Group organizes monthly outings to natural places near home. Most outings are 3-5 mile hikes lasting 2-3 hours. Hikes are led by a certified Sierra Club Outings Leader and feature interpretive moments to point out special local flora and fauna as well as connections to local environmental issues. Outdoor recreational outings emphasize exploration of the many great parks and natural areas in Prince George’s County and nearby areas, often with views of our major waterways, the Patuxent, Anacostia, or Potomac Rivers. See the calendar (insert link) for upcoming events.
The Prince George’s Group also schedules stewardship outings, including litter clean-ups and invasive plant removal. Other field trips have included tours of the County landfill, organics composting facility, single-stream materials recycling facility, and wastewater treatment plant. We also do educational outreach at community events.
The Maryland Chapter Outings Calendar lists all of the Chapter’s events by activity (hiking, biking, kayaking, and more), location, date, and sponsor.
For more information on outings sponsored by the Prince George's Group, contact Janet Gingold, Outings Chair, at janet.gingold@mdsierra.org.
Sierra Club members become certified outings leaders by taking the outings leader’s training course (OLT 101), having first aid certification and working with a mentor to develop necessary skills. If you are interested in becoming an outings leader, contact Janet Gingold at janet.gingold@mdsierra.org
