Late in the summer of 2018, the University of Maryland administration circulated a proposal to roll back the 150-acre University Golf Course to 9 or 14 holes, to make way for construction of a 600-car surface parking lot, up to five playing fields, and a new track and field complex. Based on research, the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter concluded that the proposal cannot be justified on environmental sustainability grounds, nor is it consistent with the principles and proposed projects in the University's Facilities Master Plan, updated earlier this year.
