Dan Smith, a Cheverly resident who is an environmental communications and policy expert with local, national, and international experience in urban forestry, environmental justice, and community outreach, is the winner of the 2012 Prince George’s Sierra Club Walter “Mike” Maloney Environmental Service Award.
Smith is Co-founder and President of Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek, founded in 2004. He is the first citizen voting member of the interagency, multi-jurisdiction Anacostia Watershed Partnership, Chair of the Anacostia Watershed Citizen Advisory Committee (AWCAC), and organizer of its first Citizen’s Summit.
In addition to initiating a Green Infrastructure Plan for Cheverly, he is regularly seen in Upper Marlboro and Annapolis advocating on environmental and development issues. Most recently, he has been advocating for modern storm water treatment at the Monroe Gardens apartment redevelopment project along Quincy Run behind the Prince George's Publick Playhouse in Cheverly.
