Program and Schedule
Jamboree 2019: Outdoors for All: Get Inspired, Get Connected and Lead!
Every two years, in a beautiful corner of our home state, Marylanders come together for a retreat for a family-friendly weekend of hiking, workshops, yoga, keynote speakers, live music and s'mores!
On the weekend of October 11th, 2019 over 100 Sierrans came together to forge a shared vision to create the type of community that is necessary to win our environmental fights.
What a wonderful weekend of terrific workshops and speakers, contra dancing, yoga, entertaining live auction, campfire singing & s’mores, critter dude, art in the park, nature walks, creepy crawly bioblitz revealing all kinds of plants and animals.
Special thanks to the Shepherd’s Spring kitchen for providing delicious meals for the weekend and to the Sunday volunteer lunch crew! But most of all, all our attendees from old to young made it a wonderful event.
New and veteran activists from a diversity of backgrounds and experiencescame together to network and build community to bring their talents and energy to the Sierra Club and the environmental movement in Maryland.

Our Keynote Speakers 2019 were Krish O’Mara Vignarajah and Joel Pannell!
Krish O’Mara Vignarajah serves as President and CEO of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, one of the oldest and largest immigration organizations in the nation. Before this, Krish ran a groundbreaking campaign for Governor of Maryland. Prior to entering politics, she served as Policy Director to First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House, where she led presidential initiatives including Let Girls Learn. Before the White House, she was Senior Advisor at the State Department under Secretary Hillary Clinton and Secretary John Kerry. Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Krish practiced law at Jenner & Block, worked at McKinsey & Company, where she consulted for Fortune 100 companies, clerked for the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and taught at Georgetown University as an adjunct professor. Mrs. Vignarajah graduated from Yale College, where she earned a Master’s degree in Political Science and a B.S. in Molecular Biology, then studied as a Marshall Scholar at Oxford University, before returning to Yale Law School. She serves on the Maryland state boards of Sierra Club and EMERGE.
Joel Pannell is the Associate Director of Sierra Club's Outdoors for All campaign, where he provides senior level leadership and strategic alignment to the Club's work to ensure equitable access to the multiple benefits of getting outdoors. Joel has over a decade of experience working to advance policies, programs, and projects that promote partnerships at the local, regional, and national levels to increase investment in accessible public green spaces. This includes his recent work in leading the development of the national Ten Minute Walk Campaign, which now has the support of over 200 mayors who have committed toward a goal of having all of their city's residents live within a ten minute walk of a quality park. Joel is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park. Go Terps!!! In his free time, he enjoys getting outdoors with his two daughters and officiating high school basketball in the Washington DC area
Shepherd's Spring Outdoor Ministry & Retreat Center is a beautiful outdoor retreat center on 220 acres of rolling, wooded land along the Potomac River and C&O Canal. Three options of accommodations: hotel-style rooms in the lodge, communal living in cabins, or camping out beneath the stars! Shepherd's Spring is located just 10 minutes from one of the most noted landmarks on Antietam National Battlefield, the Dunker Church.
