The Sierra Club endorses Brooke Lierman for Maryland Comptroller because she is an energetic and effective advocate for the environment and environmental justice. As Maryland Comptroller, Brooke will not only be the state’s financial guardian, but also work to improve transparency and accountability, and promote policies that improve equity throughout the state.
The Comptroller is a member of Maryland’s Board of Public Works, which sets government purchasing policies and approves major contracts. Brooke has pledged to make climate resilience a key pillar of the Comptroller’s Office and to apply a “climate lens” to decisions.

Was the chief sponsor of two of the Sierra Club’s six highest priority bills in the 2021 legislative session: the Plastic Bag Reduction Act, and the Transit Safety and Investment Act

Led the successful effort to authorize local governments to create Resilience Authorities to address rising waters and urban heat island effects caused by climate change

Was named “Legislator of the Year” in 2019 by the Maryland League of Conservation Voters
