Maryland Sierra Club and the DC Environmental Film Festival announced today the launch of the MD Sierra Film Club. Featuring hundreds of films, monthly discussion panels, and curated playlists, the program invites deeper understanding of pressing issues and participation in a dynamic world of local grassroots activism.
College Park, MD - The Sierra Club Maryland Chapter (SCMD), and the D.C. Environmental Film Festival (DCEFF) have partnered to create the MD Sierra Film Club, a program to promote environmental awareness, climate justice, and improved stewardship of our natural resources.
“DCEFF is excited to be partnering with Sierra Club of Maryland to present important stories and enlightening discussions about the environmental challenges facing our region and the world,” states DCEFF’s Executive Director, Chris Head. He adds, “Through the MD Sierra Film Club, we hope to increase awareness and inspire positive action for the planet.”
The MD Sierra Film Club offers a wide range of films spanning several decades of past festivals. Anyone who joins the free club has access to the films, which provide eye-witness insights into important environmental advocacy issues. The club also invites participation in a dynamic world of local grassroots activism with SCMD.
“Sierra Club has come to recognize that we cannot solve environmental issues by looking at them in a vacuum,” explains Josh Tulkin, Director of SCMD. “Information about environmental conservation and education are at the forefront of our organization. We must explore the intersection between the environment and race, economics, politics, and more. These films will help our members expand their understanding of complex issues and the relationship between environmental harm and many other issues impacting our society today.”
The MD Sierra Film Club features a monthly panel discussion where members are encouraged to participate by submitting their own questions to the panelists. The film line up will focus on a variety of current issues affecting Maryland, including fracking and the cancellation of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, the quality of the air we breathe, and disproportionate pollution impact on some communities.
