We are thrilled to announce the hiring of our newest team member, Crystal Hall, who will be our new Baltimore Beyond Coal organizer.
Crystal is an Organizing Representative with the Beyond Coal Campaign and will be based in Baltimore with the Maryland Chapter of the Sierra Club. She most recently worked as a Leadership Organizer with United Workers, co-coordinating its Work with Dignity program and Working Matters, a coalition of 160 organizations that successfully passed earned sick leave legislation in Maryland. With United Workers Crystal also supported a campaign to stop what would have been the nation’s largest trash-burning incinerator in the Curtis Bay neighborhood of Baltimore. Her background includes work in environmental justice, human rights and grassroots community organizing.
Crystal brings ten years of organizing experience to the Sierra Club in anti-poverty and faith-rooted contexts with a national network of grassroots organizations. She began working in Baltimore first as a fellow and then on staff with the Poverty Initiative, now the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights and Social Justice based at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. She also holds a Ph.D. in New Testament, and is especially interested in reading sacred texts from an ecological perspective. Her two forthcoming books in 2018 are From Cosmos to New Creation: A Call to Justice with Earth in Galatians and Insights for Reading the Bible in the Twenty-First Century: Reading the Bible with the Poor.
