Join Our Team for Fall 2017!

Maryland Sierra Club is currently looking for Fall 2017 interns! If you have a passion for the environment, a love for activism, and want to learn more about the first and most influential grassroots organization in our country, this is the opportunity you’ve been looking for! We offer a variety of internship opportunities, in which our interns are able to work directly with staff members and volunteer leadership to gain positive, real world experience within an environmental non-profit organization. The focus of these internships ranges from Water and Energy Conservation to Administrative and Communications to Stewardship Outings Fieldwork. Interns have the chance to work both in an office environment and outdoor natural environment. For a full and detailed list of these opportunities and how to apply, visit our internships information web page

Our interns are a much valued addition to the Maryland Sierra Club team. This Summer 2017’s nine Sierra Club Maryland interns have contributed hugely to our campaigns and programs helping on virtually every aspect, giving them a glimpse into the leadership and organization of the Sierra Club. Our interns coordinate and attend conservation based hikes and trips, create blog posts to aid communication with members, develop graphics to urge direct action, research specific areas of conservation interest, organize, take photos of, and report on events, work outdoors to preserve natural places, make phone calls and enter data, run the front desk and answer the phone, and attend, take notes, and present at meetings. We hope to give all of our interns as much real experience as possible to help each rising leader achieve his or her future goals while furthering the Sierra Club’s environmental goals. Check out what our Summer 2017 interns have to say about their internship experiences below!

Our great interns on our outing to Buzzards Rock

Katie Hatcher, Communications Intern: “This Summer I not only updated the social media accounts, but also helped plan a fundraiser that raised over $30,000, got our chapter verified on Twitter (yay!), and met great people who share a similar interest in protecting the environment!”

Allie Bull, Beyond Coal Intern: “I enjoyed my internship with the MD Sierra Club because I got a deeper understanding of the environmental issues and injustices in Baltimore City. After going to school here for three years, it was important for me to gain this understanding and appreciation of people fighting for a clean and safe environment. During my internship here I wrote a few Letters to the Editor and even got three published in the Baltimore Sun. It was empowering to have my voice heard among the others already fighting the hard fight here in the city.”

Ashli Taylor, Jamboree/Stewardship Intern: “My internship has given me valuable skills that will be transferable in all aspects of life. I have never been involved with grassroots work, but through this internship I have truly grown an appreciation for all of the momentum that is developed through grassroots organizations such as the Sierra Club.”

Aaron Posner, Energy Intern: “This was an amazing opportunity to contribute to the fight for the environment and wade into the world of environmental policy!”

Mary Schaefer, Conservation Outings Intern: “Through this internship I have learned what it means to take initiative. I was able to coordinate my own kayak outing that supported a clean water campaign that I care deeply about. Working side-by-side with our Chapter Coordinator has really given me an inside look at how grassroots organizations are run.”

Tori Molyneaux, Clean Water Intern: "One of the best things about working at the Sierra Club this summer was the highly collaborative environment. It was great to not only have a team of interns who were always willing to help me out with whatever I was working on, but also to have the opportunity to work on projects beyond the scope of my own internship. Through this, I was really able to strengthen my communication skills and explore new fields, such as website editing and graphic design."

Katie Holmes, Office/Stewardship Intern: "Interning for the Sierra Club has broadened my understanding of invasive biology and stengthened my desire to protect the ecosystems that can be found in our own gardens."
