ODH Picnic at Carderock

The One Day Hike Picnic was held this past weekend on the C&O Canal at Carderock. Each year the Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings (SCPRO) holds a hike and picnic to celebrate that year’s One Day Hike (ODH), now in its 45th consecutive year! The picnic is a great opportunity to thank the approximately 100 volunteers needed to put on the ODH, and to congratulate the hikers who completed—or attempted—the 50 or 100 km version of the ODH. The weather for the hike/picnic was fantastic and so was the turnout. Over 60 people came to walk about 9 miles on the towpath, eat summer food, and mix with other hikers, volunteers, friends, and family.

The C&O Canal National Historical Park is one of the nation’s most frequented National Parks. It encompasses the 184-mile long canal, which provides unsurpassed views of the beautiful Potomac River and a much-needed natural preserve in a mostly urban area. The canal is a real treasure for this area and was famously saved from a fate as a highway when Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas challenged reporters to walk its length with him. The park is now a superb venue for all sorts of outdoor recreation, including biking, paddling, horseback riding, bird watching, relaxing, or hiking many, many miles.
