Summer 2017 has gotten off to a great start thanks to our wonderful interns! Read more below to learn more about them and what they're doing to help the Maryland Chapter.
Aaron Posner, Energy Intern
Aaron is from Silver Spring, Maryland, but spends most of his year majoring in English at Reed College in Portland Oregon, where he is entering his senior year. In his free time he works on various forms of activism, plays music, and goes on hikes and camping trips. Aaron is particularly interested in working at the Sierra Club to explore concepts of environmental justice and the intersections of environmentalism and other forms of activism.
Alex Reardon, Outings and Stewardship Intern
Alex is from the tranquil town of Ellicott City, Maryland and is a rising junior at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is working towards a B.S. in chemistry and is active in the TerpSki club and various intramural sports. When he’s not studying or kicking back with the boys he enjoys walking his two dogs, Dora and Wilbur, in the local Patapsco State Park and learning about modern history. As an Outings and Stewardship intern he looks forward to planning and leading local outings and educating others on the risks invasive species pose to native plants and animals.
Allie Bull, Beyond Coal Intern
Allie is a rising senior at Johns Hopkins University. She is a double major in Global Environmental Change and Sustainability and International Studies. This summer she is the Energy Intern for the Maryland Sierra Club in Baltimore City. Growing up in Vermont fueled her passion for environmental protection. Allie is passionate about protecting our natural resources and spaces, while teaching others how to respectfully enjoy and engage with nature.
Annika Leiby, Outings and Stewardship Intern
Annika is 20 years old and is from the town of Damascus in Montgomery County Maryland. She is a rising senior at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania where she is pursuing a double major in environmental studies and environmental geosciences. While at school, Annika is the captain of the women’s club soccer team, is a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, and works at Skillman Library; the main library on campus. This past semester, she studied sustainability of Northern Europe at the Danish Institute of Study Abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. She enjoys the outdoors and can often be found hiking or kayaking with friends and family in her spare time. Annika is a Stewardship and Outings intern, who is excited to protect native plants in Maryland by removing invasive species. She is also excited about leading and actively participating in outings to educate others about the harmful effects caused by invasive plant species.
Ashli Taylor, Jamboree Intern
Ashli is a rising senior at the University of Maryland majoring in Government & Politics and minoring in Sustainability Studies and Middle Eastern Studies. This summer she will be focusing on the Jamboree Event which will occur in the fall in addition to helping with stewardship outings. Once she graduates from UMD, she plans on enrolling in law school specializing in environmental law. She is extremely passionate about international environmental dilemmas, especially those in Brazil.
Katie Hatcher, Communications Intern
Katie is a rising junior at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is majoring in Government and Politics and minoring in both Astronomy and Sustainability Studies. When she’s not working as the MD Sierra Club’s Communications Intern, Katie is most likely hiking or getting ready to leave for England, where she will be studying abroad for the entire year at University College London!
Katie Holmes, Stewardship and Office Coordination Intern
Katie is a UMD senior majoring in Environmental Science & Policy and she is excited to be working as a Stewardship Outings and Office Coordination intern for the Maryland Sierra Club. She spends most of her free time taking naps by the local stream. On the off chance you don’t see her there, it’s probably because she’s busy info-dumping some facet of ecosystem science on whomever happens to be in her vicinity.
Mary Schaefer, Conservation Outings Intern
Mary is from Baltimore, Maryland. She is an Environmental Studies Major and Business Minor at Gettysburg College, going into her senior year this fall. Mary is working to improve the Conservation Outings program by coordinating trips, as well as attending Stewardship Outings to remove invasive species with her fellow interns. She hopes to work with nonprofit organizations that aim to push "green" policy and change people's perspective on environmental activism after she graduates. When she is not in the office, you are mostly likely to find Mary enjoying a coffee with her friends at the local Starbucks.
Tori Molyneaux, Water Intern
Tori will be a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall, where she studies economics and political science. This summer, she is working with the Sierra Club as the Water Intern, in addition to helping out on the Beyond Gas and Pesticide-Free Yards campaigns. When she's not working hard to promote sustainability, Tori loves to watch Carolina basketball, consume large amounts of cheese, and work with kids at Camp Kesem.
