Annapolis Maryland
This morning the Maryland Senate unanimously passed HB 1492, which authorizes and funds an innovative strategy to address food deserts.
The bill sponsor, Delegate Antonio Hayes, shared this statement.
"I am pleased HB 1492 unanimously passed the Senate today. This bill will help ensure that small corner stores in Maryland can get the equipment they need to stock fresh, healthy produce, which will allow them to accept benefits from food assistance programs. Today, a 1 in 4 residents in Baltimore live in a food desert. Making fresh, healthy foods available to all Marylanders, regardless of their race or what neighborhood they live in, is a social justice issue. Thank you to the Senate for taking action on this urgent matter. Let's build on this momentum, and turn this bill into Maryland law."
Sierra Club would like to applaud Delegate Hayes for introducing this legislation.
