Vote NO on Montgomery County Question B!

From David Sears, Montgomery County Sierra Club Chair

If passed, Question B would impose term limits on the County Executive and County Council members.

In brief, here is the rationale for our position opposing term limits --

The environmental legislation that SC has promoted in MoCo in recent years (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) is usually complicated and requires expertise and institutional knowledge. There is a clear advantage to having a Council that includes some members with significant experience in the Council's processes and some of the substantive issues that come before the Council.  If we the voters (or we the Sierra Club) are unhappy with the performance of one or more current Council members, then (at the next election) we can work to elect another candidate to replace her/him/them.  Montgomery County has an unusually engaged and knowledgeable citizenry and voters have exercised their opportunity to vote out incumbent Council members more than once over the past decade or so.

For context, you might want to know that Question B is the brainchild of Robin Ficker; and it is supported by the anti-immigrant group Help Save Maryland.)

Beyond Sierra Club, some of the other groups that are urging Vote NO on Question B include:    SEIU 32BJ, Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA),  Casa In Action,  Jews United for Justice (JUFJ),  Montgomery County Democratic Party,  Montgomery County Young Democrats,  African American Democratic Club of Montgomery County,  Latino Democratic Club of Montgomery County, Muslim Democratic Club of Montgomery County, Woman's Democratic Club of Montgomery County, and the Washington Post.)
