WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Supreme Court of the United States established marriage equality nationwide in a 5-4 decision.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"Today, love triumphed at the Supreme Court. By ensuring that every American has the right to marry the person they choose, this decision moves our nation one huge step closer to ensuring that our founding promise of equality is fully kept. This is a victory for millions of loving couples across the country who will finally see legal obstacles to their marriages torn down. Further, it is a victory for every American who strives to see all our most basic rights secured, from equal protection under the law to the rights we all have to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities.
“As a grassroots organization, the Sierra Club proudly applauds those activists across the country who have fought tirelessly for decades to ensure this day arrived. We thank them for being part of the fight to guarantee that every one of our 2.4 million members, supporters, volunteers, and staff will have no legal barriers to marry the ones we love.”
