The Howard County Sierra Club urges you to vote for our endorsed candidates.
For Howard County Executive, the Sierra Club endorses Courtney Watson. Some highlights of Courtney's environment vision are given below.
Zero Waste - Implement key “reduce, reuse, and recycle” strategies to reduce by 90% the amount of household waste reaching landfills by 2035 and encourage better practices in government facilities
Create incentives to encourage green energy
Protect water resources and reevaluate environmental policies related to development
Erosion and Sediment Control inspections – Require more Erosion and Sediment Controls (E&S) inspections during construction with increased remediation requirements. (Learn more about how Exposed Soil = Pollution and the local campaign to address the issue.)
Instill an environmental ethic in all sectors of our community
For the District 9 Senate seat, we are proudly endorsing Ryan Frederic. Ryan received his degree in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech and since then, has gone on to be the co-founder of three companies. He is passionate about preserving our farmland and open space, and understands the tremendous opportunity in growing a greener economy.
In County Council District 5, we are endorsing attorney Alan Schneider. Alan worked on a zoning referendum aimed at giving Howard County citizens more of a say in zoning decisions that affect countywide regulations and large-scale density increases. The petition called for a redefinition of Smart Growth standards where developers, not taxpayers, should pay for infrastructure improvement. He has also been heavily involved in fighting for citizen rights and environmental protection with the proposed mortuary on Route 108 in Clarksville. More recently, he has testified for Agricultural Preservation in Dayton, speaking against industrial mulching in the western part of the county.
We need your vote. Be sure to go to the polls on November 4!
