John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland in 1838 and came to the US at age 11. Scotland has now honored him with a 134 mile trail across central Scotland. The path can be used by walkers, cyclers and horse riders. It goes by coastal scenery and historic sites, a palace and other popular attractions. The official opening took place on April 20 with the First Minister, Alex Salmond, and a number of John Muir look-a-likes present.
This is wonderful tribute to John Muir whom we know as a founder of the Sierra Club and the person who persuaded President Teddy Roosevelt to return the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove to federal protection as part of Yosemite National Park. In 1908, in his honor, Roosevelt designated John Muir Woods, a redwood forest north of San Francisco, as a national forest. We, the Sierra Club, celebrate his birthday each year on or about April 21st with Earth Day activities.
