Baltimore in particular has the highest rates of both childhood and adult asthma in the state, surpassing national averages with more than a quarter of high school students who have been diagnosed with asthma at some point!1
The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) is working to protect our health with new safeguards against coal plant pollution but corporate polluters are working to roll back the strong protections initially proposed!
In the past two weeks, over 2,000 Marylanders including 52 public officials have taken a stand on the state's unacceptable levels of air pollution by sending letters to Governor O'Malley voicing support for stronger pollution controls on Maryland's coal-fired power plants. You can help keep the momentum going by writing a letter to the editor.
Letters to the editor are a great tool for us to demonstrate our support for strong, health protective pollution limits for these plants. The opinion page is the most-read page of a newspaper, and public officials pay close attention to this section of their local papers to get a sense of how the community feels about certain topics.
