Earth Day Event Draws 100 to County Park

The club’s 20th annual fundraising Earth Day 5K Race & Walk held April 19th was a big success, drawing nearly 100 runners and walkers to Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis on a bright, cloudless day.

The weather was perfect and everyone had a great time, including any number of toddlers in strollers being pushed along by their parents -- and even several (leashed) family dogs.

The top male runner was Jeffrey Jackson, followed by Johan Broen in second and James Cardillo in third. The top female runner was Ali Colman, with Megan Moore placing second in that category and Jess Rigelman placing third. A link to the name, finishing place and time of every finisher can be found at the end of this article, along with a link to dozens of great pictures.

Plaques were awarded to the top three finishing men and the top three finishing women, and medallions went to the winners in age groups ranging from 13 and under to 70 and over. In addition, nearly every participant went home with a treat of some sort thanks to gift certificates and other goodies donated for a post-race drawing.

Chris Trumbauer, the leading force on environmental issues on the County Council, where he represents the sixth district, participated in the 8:30 am race and assisted in the prize awards.

The race would not have been possible, nor a financial success, without the tremendous support of several community businesses, including KB True Value Hardware, Chick & Ruth’s Delly, the Annapolis Running Shop, Olmos Brothers Landscaping, Dr. William Boro and the Chiropractic Center of Annapolis, and the Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital (GAVH). GAVH donated a bag of goodies to the first place finishing dog, a happy brown English lab known as Angus, who with his buddy Simon (who came in second), were accompanying runner Geoffrey Ewenson.

Helping out with the post-race goodies were Annapolis Ice Cream Co, Annapolis Canoe and Kayak, Grump’s Café, Bowen’s Farm Supply, Graul’s Market on Taylor Ave. and Starbucks at City Dock. The tent was once again donated for the day by Brian Holt at Absolute Party Rental.
